Baptised Teen Retreat

22nd-23rd February 2013

Written by Sabrina Dougall

This year saw the first ever retreat just for the London baptised teens. Thirty-five teens from around London took a coach up to the Frontier Centre in Northampton and were joined by two teens from nearby Birmingham and even Hannah Reed all the way from Sweden! The theme was ‘Unbreakable’, based on the scripture Ecclesiastes 4:9-12. The teens were inspired to have the same love that Jesus did for his disciples, considering others better than themselves and eager to be like-minded.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12 Though one may be overpowered,
    two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

The weekend retreat was a fantastic opportunity for fun and fellowship, with Mike DeSouza leading the Bible talks. Sharing from his own experiences growing up, the teens were moved after reflecting on Philippians 2:1 and watching a clip from The Passion of Christ.

Philippians 2:1-5

2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Highlights of the retreat included a mega two-hour sport and games session, as well as Costco chocolate cake and the time spent dedicated to deep prayer with fellow brothers and sisters. The lessons encouraged us to have an unbreakable vision of being united in Christian friendships that glorify God. In the split lesson, the sisters were encouraged to consider which friends are in the spiritual trenches with them, and how they can be more inclusive of visitors to church. The brothers were fired up to learn from the example of David in the Bible and sharpen their ideals of being their best for God.

The countryside setting was a great place to have a 24 hour break from the world, and spend more time than usual serving and in fellowship with one another.

There was even time to make a video…

The teens would like to thank the Farrell and the Price families in particular for their serving hearts on the retreat!
